Frequently asked questions:
How can I check if my vehicle is showing as insured on the Motor Insurance Database (MID)?
You can check if your vehicle is on the Motor Insurance Database by visiting http://www.askmid.com and selecting the free check.
Will I be arrested if I am stopped by the Police and they can't find my vehicle on the Motor Insurance Database?
No. However, there is the potential to have your vehicle seized, and as a result any costs incurred by LeasePlan will be passed on. Remember it is a criminal offence to drive without valid insurance and you may be prosecuted.
Why have I received an Insurance Advisory Letter?
You have received an Insurance Advisory Letter if LeasePlan, as the registered keeper of the vehicle, has been notified that no insurance records exist for your vehicle on the Motor Insurance Database (MID). This may be because your insurance provider has not updated the MID with your records. This must be resolved with your insurance company within 14 days of the issue of the Insurance Advisory Letter. The details are then passed by the MID to the DVLA for enforcement action which may include the following: issue of a fixed penalty fine; the vehicle may be seized or clamped; court prosecution. If you manage the MID yourself then you must check your vehicle is listed and all the details are correct. If you do not manage it yourself then contact your insurance provider to ensure the policy states the correct vehicle details.
What should I do if I receive an Insurance Advisory letter?
You should follow the instructions on the letter and advise LeasePlan if the vehicle should be declared as Off Road (SORN) or if you no longer have the vehicle. If you have a valid insurance policy and have updated MID, check that the registration number shown on MID is accurate and amend the database if necessary. Where it has been necessary to update MID and to verify that the vehicle now appears on the MID, visit www.askmid.com. Please allow 24 hours before seeking confirmation. If you do not manage MID and either have this dealt with by your insurance company or a Third Party you must first check that your insurance policy is showing the correct vehicle details. If there are any discrepancies contact your provider immediately to get this amended. If all the information is correct contact the insurance provider as the vehicle is not showing on MID and will need to be resolved. Failure to rectify this will result in receipt of a Fixed Penalty Fine. Vehicles identified on the road as not showing on MID could be stopped and seized by the police.
