Caring for Your Vehicle
To keep your vehicle running as safely and reliably as possible it is important that it is maintained in line with its service schedule. Failure to do so may invalidate any warranties and charges may apply.
Here are a few simple checks that you should carry out at least once a week:
- Check the engine oil level.
- Check that all lights are working properly.
- Check brake fluid and windscreen washer fluid levels.
- Check that there is sufficient tread on your tyres (see below for more information).
- Wash your car and look for any damage that needs attention.
Every two weeks:
Check the air pressure in the tyres (this should ideally be done when the tyres are cold).
Refer to your vehicle handbook for guidance on safety checks and how they should be carried out:
- The UK legal minimum tyre tread depth is 1.6mm across the central 3/4 width of the tyre, and round the whole tyre circumference.
- Ideally you should use a tyre gauge, but if you don't have one you can visually inspect the tyre.
- Within the main tread grooves there are raised bars - if the tyre is worn to the same level as one of these bars then you should arrange to get the tyre changed as soon as possible.
- Remember that as the driver you are responsible for checking that the tyres meet legal requirements.
